This post may be a little out of left field for Sowing Wealth, but taking advantage of free entertainment is smart spending, right? Oracle Corp. puts on a major event in San Francisco every year called Oracle OpenWorld. Over the years it's grown larger and larger still. They expect as many as 40,000 people to converge in San Francisco next week for the week-long event.
So what's in it for you? A lot actually and much of it at no cost. For starters there's a keynote on Sunday night with Mary Matalin and James Carville, two well known political commentators. They're on either side of the ticket and happen to be married. They always put on a good show and this year's ought to be really good since the election's so riveting. This keynote is free for all registered attendees. Monday morning will feature a guest speaker that is a secret. You'll have to look for the OpenWorld ad in the newspapers to see the name of the special guest. It should be worth showing up for.
Larry Ellison will speak on Wednesday. He's one of the richest men in the world and is always interesting. Yes, he'll talk about Oracle software mostly and that might not interest you, however, he often speaks on other matters such as sailing or domestic policy and that's worth hearing. Only downside is that his keynote will be SRO, which means you'll need to go wait in line to get a seat and sit through an HP keynote first. Up to you.
Did I mention free parties and food? Well, they're called networking events actually and OpenWorld has a ton of 'em. Some of them are open to all registered attendees. Monday night at the St. Francis, Tuesday night at Temple nightclub and Thursday afternoon right outside in Yerba Buena gardens. There will also be a Green Marketplace during the daytime hours where you can get free samples of organic and sustainably grown foodstuffs along with free samples of beer (they can't sell it for certain legal reasons).
Lastly there's the Show Your Badge and Save program that allows all registrants to go to merchants around town like Saks and Bloomingdales for special discounts.
Go to www.oracle.com/openworld/registration and register for the FREE Visitor Plus Pass to experience the best show in town next week starting Sunday.
